San Francisco Bay was the last place in the United States to host a whaling station The last whales were taken outside the Bay as late as 1971, up until whaling became illegal and the Richmond whaling station went out of business. If you google "Richmond Whaling Station" or click on this photo you will find some amazing stories and more photos like this one from KQED's QUEST Flickr site.
