The Mission Greenbelt project is a proposed urban earth artwork made of continuous native plant sidewalk gardens connecting Franklin Square Park to Dolores Park. This work will require community engagement, partnerships with city agencies and local organizations as well as outreach and education about natural habitats and the ecological benefits of native plants.

In October, I received support from the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery to transform their Gallery
space into Mission Greenbelt Public Awareness Campaign Headquarters. Until December 22nd 2007, the Gallery will be full of artwork related to the Mission Greenbelt, and is also an active Campaign Headquarters for public meetings, events and workshops.

We'll meet at CELLspace at noon on Sunday, September 23rd and get our hands dirty with Rachel Kesel. Rachel will bring along some examples of plants that thrive in the Mission. She'll also share a list of ignored spots for potential radical restoration and discuss identifying your own site. Rachel will be demonstrating fast planting techniques for us in her portable demo box. We'll also learn about the best time of year to plant and how to maintain our gardens into the future. If we're really lucky, Rachel will bring us some pears from her tree.

      HIDDEN HISTORIES
Divulging Secrets of San Francisco's Eastern Landscape @ Crucible Steel Gallery 2050 Bryant St.

Opening Reception Saturday, September 8. 8pm
Closing Party Saturday, September 29. 8pm
Crucible Steel Gallery 2050 Bryant St. @ 18th Street, San Francisco CA.

Cities can be secretive. Sometimes, you have to search in the most out-of-the-way nooks to uncover their stories or understand how they came to be. Hidden Histories artists explore narratives of San Francisco's Eastern landscape that have been obscured by time, development, familiarity, and social norms. Artists Yukako Ezoe, Amber Hasselbring, Francisco Hernandez, Patrick Piazza, and The Counter Narrative Society consider concepts of geography, space, tours and tourism, and the way that places hide and reveal their own histories.

The Crucible Steel Gallery serves as the Hidden Histories Headquarters and
Visitors Center with visual projects displaying artifacts, maps, and narrative installations. The gallery also serves as a point of departure for artist-led and self-guided tours that take place in neighborhoods, parks, and secret locations all over San Francisco's Eastern edge.

Curated by Hypersea artists: Joshua Short and Victoria Restler

CONTACT:
Joshua Short
HYPERSEA :: Co-director
T: (415) 642-6576
E: info@hypersea.net
W: www.hypersea.net

Meet at CELLspace at noon on Saturday, September 22nd. Bring your walking shoes and plenty of ideas.

Join us for a walking tour of the proposed Mission Greenbelt. We'll start at Franklin Square Park and walk a half-mile into Dolores Park. At CELLspace, we’ll take some time to view the Hidden Histories exhibit and familiarize ourselves with the Mission Greenbelt witth guidebooks and maps. Then we'll start walking.

During the tour, we’ll take time to talk with residents living and working in the Mission. Yes, Spanish speakers are welcome and encouraged to attend!

The proposed Mission Greenbelt connects four parks with a schoolyard garden and existing landscaped sidewalks. Also, a segment of the Greenbelt runs along the banks of the now long vanished Mission Creek. We’ll make a stop at Alioto Mini Park and at the Mission Playground/Pool. While basking in the sun at these small outdoor Mission District refuges, we'll share our ideas and questions with each other. Some questions on my mind are: What will the Greenbelt do for city residents? How will it affect wildlife and the environment? What will it take for us to learn to cooperate? What role does the city of San Francisco play in facilitating this work?

We’ll wrap up the tour around five o’clock in Dolores Park, where interested parties may sign up to join the efforts.

One of the ways that Mission Bay was filled was that it was used as a pretty major garbage dump from the 1870's up until after the 1906 earthquake. The area South of Channel street was known as "Dumpville" and by 1895 it covered as much as 20 acres and received almost 400 cartloads of garbage a day from the densely populated and rapidly growing South of Market area. This image is from a Sanborn map from the SF Public Library and it calls to mind the society of "ragpickers" that grew up around the disposal of garbage. Anything and everything that could be put to use was gleaned from the trash by whole families that lived in the area and made their living from the dump. Notice the piles of tin cans duly noted in the drawings. it's a pretty big building for just burning trash. Perhaps it was a facility for sorting garbage as well. The dredged cut along Channel Street still exsited throughout this time and it collected all manner of toxic effluvia to the point that instead of being called Mission Creek, it was commonly referred to as "Shit Creek".

Its rather ironic to note that Mission Bay served for many years as an informal "dump" area during its post industrial decline. Only a few years ago it was possible to wander about the open lots of Mission Bay and to stumble upon bedframes, old tossed out baby carriages, toilets, teddy bears, abandonded shoes, stoves, refrigerators, tires, whole vehicles and all other forms of detritus that people didn't wish to pay to offload at the city dump.
